How I Quit, Part 2
Article: 30 January 2015 – by Andy Prevost
Many before me have progressed through ever lower levels of nicotine strengths. Two in particular were both long term heavy smokers. Both started at 24 mg/ml nicotine strength and now vape at 0. I'm impressed with their path and their strategies (Shai Be from Dashvapes and Randy Laporte from The Canadian Vaper).
Cutting back on nicotine strengths in vapor liquid is not like switching from regular strength cigarettes to lights. Even dropping to 0 nicotine is not like throwing our your smokes and never touching another one again.
In the previous article documenting my journey towards 0 nicotine, I pointed out that the tobacco companies put additives in cigarettes to enhance the effect of nicotine. The tobacco companies call this "free basing" nicotine. By adding an ammonia compound, the cigarettes deliver the nicotine to the brain extremely quickly and contribute to more intense addiction.
Our vaping liquids do not contain these "free basing" ingredients. The rate that nicotine reaches the brain is actually slower when vaping.
You can actually try a test yourself. If you normally vape at 12 mg/ml – next time you drop by your favorite vape shop, try out the same flavor you normally vape at 12 mg/ml but this time at 6 mg/ml.
I am no different than anyone else. When I dropped from 24 mg/ml to 18 mg/ml, I had absolutely no negative effects and did not detect any difference at all. Not in throat hit, not in satisfaction levels ... nothing. Exactly the same results when I dropped from 18 mg/ml to 12 mg/ml. And, exactly the same results when I dropped from 12 mg/ml to 6 mg/ml. And, exactly the same results when I dropped from 6 mg/ml to 3 mg/ml.
I've tried going back up to higher strengths, but I get the nicotine buzz. And, quite thankful for that too. It's simple to go down in nicotine strength, but a challenge to go back.
Now, that's worked so far in going down to 3 mg/ml. I normally vape at 8.5 watts – that important and I'll explain why. You might want to have a look at the explanation of mg/ml: http://www.kickashnow.com/posts/explanation-of-mg-ml/
This next part, I want to thank Shai Be at Dashvapes for reminding me. When we told me about this, I really felt like slapping myself in the forehead ... why didn't I remember that? Gheez, so simple.
Most vapers that use dripper atomizers will tell you that they vape at 0 mg/ml – no nicotine whatsoever. The reason for that is that at the high wattage they generate with their devices and drippers, any nicotine content at all would means a nicotine rush. What that tells me is that any vape liquid that is used at high wattages generates more throat hit and an effect similar to nicotine.
And, that in a nutshell, is what I plan on doing using clearomizers.
When I make the final switch to 0 nicotine level, I will use the same flavor(s) that I am used to vaping. Instead of the 3 mg/ml I use now, I will drop that to 0 nicotine. To replace the effects of nicotine and the throat hit, I will kick up the wattage on my device. Shai Be used to smoke two and a half packs of cigarettes. He's now at 0 nicotine and he did it by kicking up the wattage on his device to 35 watts. Now, I'm not sure what his regular vape wattage used to be, but I will run a series of experiments and let you all know what is satisfying.
I have decided on what vape gear I will use – particularly for the month of Febuary when this is most critical.
For a battery, I will use the IPV Mini, the Franken-IPV I made using a Unicorn case and IPV 2 circuit board, and the Heatvape Defender. The main one will likely be the Franken-IPV. Note that I will be testing a few devices through this period for possible review articles (Sigelei 150 watt, Cloupor Mini, Heatvape Defender 50 watt, Heatvape Invader Mini, and the iMAX – at a minimum).
For a tank, I will use the KangerTech Subtank, Subtank Mini and Subtank Nano. I will have the Aspire Atlantis as a backup.
For vapor liquid, I am searching out a Dragonfruit, Pomegranate and possibly one more – all at 0 mg. I will keep some Pomegranate 3 mg handy.
