Joyetech Cuboid

In the past year, Joyetech has been redeeming itself with some good quality devices with specifications that are in demand. Excellent designs, quality components, and quality builds help define a new era for Joyetech devices.

Canvape send us the Joyetech Cuboid. We are showing a promotion picture at the right that shows the Silver unit. We received the black unit.

The Joyetech Cuboid has a built in USB micro port that serves dual purposes: it is a balanced charger for the dual in-series 18650 batteries (batteries available separately) as well as a firmware upgrade port.

We immediately upgraded from the 150W maximum wattage output to firmware version 3.10 and now have a 200 watt beast at our disposal. It supports regular coils (Kanthal, Nichrome) as well as Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel 316.

Joyetech does a poor job of describing TCR (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance). Temperature coefficient of resistance is the technology behind variable temperature. It is the "resistivity of some metals" and the process by which measuring coil resistance (ohms). Joyetech provides the ability to edit the three variable temperature coil types so that you can maximize the exact coils and metals you have for resistivity. You should note that the literature from Joyetech appear to show TCR as another vaping "mode" ... it is not a mode, rather it is a way for you to edit settings for the temperature control modes.

We used several atomizers with the Joyetech Cuboid to test Power mode (with Kanthal coils in a dripper) and Variable Temperature mode (with Ni200 coils). boid. We did not edit the TCR for the NI200 coils we are using, accepting the default built into the Joyetech Cuboid.

The unit we received is shown at the left. It's the black version with a nice high contrast display that is easily viewable in all just about any lighting conditions – even outdoors in full daylight.

The size is a bit of a surprise ... it is just slightly wider than the width of the two batteries at 42 mm wide. It is a bit deeper (28 mm) than other devices, but quite comfortable.

The Joyetech is shown at the left with the button in the usual position. The front of the unit shows an excellent high contrast OLED display. Below the OLED display is a toggle bar for adjustment control. Press the left side for - and the right side for +. On side opposite the firing button is the micro USB port for both charging and firmware upgrades.

While not documented, we believe the material to be an aluminum alloy.

The bottom of the unit has a swing out battery cover. It holds the dual 18650 batteries firmly in place. The battery cover has five holes on either end for battery venting. The contacts for the batteries is a gold colored material (as is the 510 connector).

Note that Joyetech recommend that the batteries be removed and charged in an external charger.

I must confess that using this, I blew out a brand new Ni200 coil. I completely forgot to set the base resistance between coil changes. The first coil I had set the base resistance to 0.11 ohms. The second coil was 0.28 ohms ... and (you guessed it) I forgot to change the base resistance. Ended up with a horrid burned out taste that I could not recover from. One coil wasted. Since the tank was not out of juice, I am not surprised that temperature control didn't kick in, it was responding properly to the settings I had put in. I'll know better next time. Between all the different coils and tanks used to test the Joyetech Cuboid, this provided an excellent vape experience all around.

The Joyetech Cuboid is available in three colors as shown at the right.

The one we received for testing is the black unit, shown at the left.

The center color is Gray and the color at the right is Silver.

All of the fire buttons on these are color matched to the unit. The adjustment toggle bar is black ... but so is the center panel that surrounds the OLED display.

All of the vertical edges are nicely rounded and provide an excellent feel in-hand.

The top of the device has a recessed area for atomizers that have air flow through the 510 connector. It's a generous air flow channel. The tank can sit flush on the top of the Cuboid ... and if smaller than the diameter of the recessed area, will sit atop the 510 connector housing (which is also raised and flush with the top). That 510 connector also has four generously sized air flow channels.

The 510 connector is spring loaded and gold-colored.

I suspect the gold-color of the 510 connector (and the battery connector at the bottom) is brass.

I did spill some liquid when using the dripper ... the 510 connector is sealed and I was able to wipe the spilled liquid without any damage to the device.

Mods seem to be getting more and more compact lately. I like the trend. This dual-battery system is amont the narrowest. Height is not bad either with the firing button is a near-perfect position for either a thumb fire or index finger fire. The size of this device compares better with single battery devices ... it's that narrow. For example, the Yihi SX350 M-Class (single 18650) is wider (and taller, I might add).

I tend to vape mainly variable temperature devices these past few months. Other than the mistake I made forgetting to set the base resistance with the Joyetech Cuboid, I haven't had a dry hit in all that time. With variable temperature, I have ended up not getting any vape when I press the fire button and assume the batteries are dead. Take a look at the tank, and I am out of juice – no other tell tale signs. Fill the tank back up and keep vaping ...

The Joyetech Cuboid is a pleasure to use. With freshly charged new batteries, I was able to vape about 9 ml of juice before needing a recharge ... I could have likely vaped another 1 ml (or a bit more) with the remaining power in the batteries, though.

So, what’s the verdict? Is it worth it?

There's a lot of hype these days about DNA 200 devices. These DNA 200 devices do deliver 200 watts of power, and they do have some nice features, but the price point is ridiculous. The Joyetech Cuboid was initially released at 150 watts and can be upgraded to 200 watts with firmware 3.10 – including download time, I was able to upgrade the Joyetech Cuboid is less than five minutes and enjoy the benefits of the upgrade and 200 watts. With replaceable 18650 batteries, this is one powerhouse at about 1/3 the price. This is an exceptional value with features that rival far more expensive devices. Is it worth it? Certainly it is. The design and build quality are excellent, the vape experience outstanding.

    TCR on the Cuboid *is* a different "mode", separate from the build-in Ni, Ti, and SS316 TC modes. The three TCR modes are their own, you are not changing the TCR for the three built-in modes.
